From players to problem solvers: How video games build critical thinking for active citizenship

The challenges facing young people today are becoming increasingly complex. Climate changeartificial intelligence, misinformation, political polarisation and rapid technological change require more than factual knowledge. They demand the ability to analyse information, question assumptionssolve problems and make informed decisions. These are the foundations of critical thinking, a skill that has become essential for active citizenship.

Active citizens do more than vote. They evaluate different perspectives, participate in respectful discussions, recognise misinformation, cooperate with others and contribute to solving community challenges. Developing these abilities should therefore be one of the key goals of modern education.

Interestingly, one of the most effective environments for developing these skills may already be familiar to millions of young people: video games.

Importantly, failure becomes part of the learning process. Instead of ending the experience, mistakes encourage players to reflect, improve and try again. This mirrors real-life problem-solving, where successful solutions often emerge through repeated attempts.

The EU Video Games project embraces this potential by encouraging young people not only to play educational games, but also to design and create their own games using accessible no-code tools.

By creating games themselves, young people identify social issues, design meaningful choices, think from different perspectives and transform ideas into interactive learning experiences. At the same time, educators and youth workers learn how to use game-based methods creatively without needing programming skills.

The project also provides templatestutorialscontent guides and technical resources that help educators and youth workers integrate game-based learning into civic education. By combining digital skillscreativity and democratic values, these resources strengthen critical thinking while making civic learning more engaging and accessible.

As today’s players become tomorrow’s decision-makers, helping young people develop critical thinking is one of the best investments we can make. Educational video games cannot replace schools or democratic institutions, but they can become powerful environments where future citizens learn to analyse problemswork together and make informed decisions with confidence.
